Microsoft Xbox 360 repair

2005–2016 · Mail-in from anywhere in the United States, or drop it off at an event.

The Xbox 360 earned its reputation the hard way — the Red Ring of Death made heat failure famous. But a 360 that survives its youth is a solid machine, and most of what brings them in today is physical: worn disc drives, damaged HDMI ports, and twenty years of dust.

The HDMI port is soldered directly to the motherboard and takes the full force of every cable tug. We replace damaged 360 HDMI ports as a routine micro-soldering job — far cheaper than replacing the console.

Common Xbox 360 problems

No picture, console powers on

Damaged HDMI port or cracked joints behind it — especially if the port feels loose.

Red Ring of Death / red power light

Heat-related hardware failure — stressed solder joints and dried thermal compound.

Won't read discs, or 'Open Tray' error

Worn DVD laser or a failing drive motor.

Loud fan, console very hot

Dust-clogged heatsinks and dried thermal paste.

Disc tray stuck

Worn tray belt or a jammed mechanism.

A 360 with no picture should have its HDMI port inspected before anything else — a loose or bent port is the most common cause, and forcing cables into it tears the solder pads and makes the repair harder.

The towel trick and other heat 'fixes' for the Red Ring do real damage. They work by warping the board briefly and make the eventual proper repair harder. If your 360 red-rings, leave it off and send it in.

Xbox 360 questions people ask

Can an Xbox 360 HDMI port be replaced?

Yes — it's a micro-soldering job on the motherboard, $99 including the new port. If the cable was forced and the board's pads are torn, that's assessed and quoted before any extra work.

Is the Red Ring of Death still fixable?

Often, yes. It's a heat-stress failure, and a board-level repair with a proper thermal service brings many consoles back. Diagnosis and repair runs $99 to $149.

How much does Xbox 360 repair cost?

HDMI port replacement is $99, disc drive service is $59, a deep clean with fresh thermal paste is $45, and board-level repairs run $99 to $149 after diagnosis.

My 360 says 'Open Tray' with a disc inside — what's wrong?

The laser is too weak to detect the disc, so the console thinks the tray is empty. A laser or drive service at $59 fixes the large majority of these.
