Series X and Series S consoles come in for the same two reasons as the PlayStation 5: a damaged HDMI port and heat. The Series X's upright design pulls dust straight up through the machine, and the Series S, being small and tightly packed, has very little margin when its intake is blocked.
The retimer chip sits behind the HDMI port on both consoles. When a cable is forced or a console is knocked over while plugged in, the damage often passes through the port and into that chip.

Series consoles refuse to pair a replacement disc drive from another machine — drive work is a repair of your own drive, not a swap.
Standing a Series X on carpet blocks the intake. A hard, flat surface with clearance around it does more for console life than anything else you can change.

What is the Xbox Series X retimer and why does it fail?
The retimer conditions the HDMI signal on its way out of the console, and it sits right behind the port. When a cable is yanked or a plugged-in console is knocked over, the force travels through the port and takes the retimer with it — which is why a port replacement alone sometimes doesn't restore the picture.
My Xbox Series S is loud and runs hot — can that be fixed?
Yes. The Series S is small and its intake blocks easily with dust and lint. A deep clean and repaste is $89, and a fan replacement is $119 if the fan bearing has already worn out.
