Pokémon save battery replacement
No cartridge lands on my bench more often than a Pokémon game that won't hold a save. Red, Blue, Yellow, Gold, Silver, Crystal — all of them store your file in memory that needs constant power from a tiny coin cell soldered to the board. Those cells are now decades old, and when one goes flat, so does the Elite Four run you spent a summer on.
How to tell the battery is the problem
The symptoms are consistent and easy to spot. If more than one of these sounds familiar, the cell is almost certainly dead or dying.

Which generation uses which cell
Generation 1 and 2 Game Boy carts use a small lithium coin cell in the CR2025 or CR1616 family, depending on how the board was assembled. Generation 2 leans on the same cell twice over: it holds the save and it runs the internal clock that drives day and night, so those carts feel doubly broken when the battery goes.
Generation 3 on Game Boy Advance — Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald — moved the save to flash memory that survives without power, but kept a CR1616 running the real-time clock. That's why an Emerald cart can save perfectly and still have a berry patch frozen in time.
The correct cell is read off your actual board rather than assumed. Board revisions differ, and fitting the wrong size is how you end up with a battery that rattles loose six months later.
Can your existing save be kept?
Sometimes. If there's any charge left in the old cell, the cartridge can be kept powered through the swap and your file survives intact. If the battery is stone dead, the data is already gone — no technique brings it back.
That's the practical argument for sending a cart in while it still saves. A game that's currently holding a file is the one most likely to keep it. If your file matters to you, say so in your ticket and I'll treat it accordingly, with the honest caveat that not every board allows it.
What the repair actually involves
The shell comes apart with a 3.8mm gamebit driver — no prying, no cracked tabs. The old cell is desoldered, the pads are cleaned, and a new tabbed cell is soldered in with the correct polarity. Loose glued-in batteries and pressure contacts are not repairs; they fail, usually right after you've put twenty hours back into the game.
Then it gets tested: save, power off, wait, power back on, confirm the file is still there. Generation 2 carts get the clock checked too. Only then does it get packed up.
