Why your cartridge won't boot
A black screen isn't a dead game nine times out of ten. Between the cartridge pins and the console's connector there are dozens of tiny metal contacts that have spent thirty years collecting dust, smoke residue, finger oils, and oxidation. The console can't read through that film, so it gives you a blank screen, a flashing title, or a scrambled mess — and none of those mean the ROM is gone.

Different failures look different on screen. Knowing which one you're looking at saves time and money.
- Solid black or blank screen — contacts aren't making a connection at all
- Flashing or looping title screen (classic NES) — intermittent contact, often the console's 72-pin connector
- Garbled sprites, wrong colours, or scrambled text — partial connection on some data lines
- Boots fine but forgets your save — that's the battery, not the contacts
- Every cart in the console misbehaves — the problem is the console, not the games
Why blowing on it made things worse
We all did it, and it did seem to work — but the fix was pulling the cart out and pushing it back in, which scraped a fresh path through the grime. The breath itself deposited moisture onto bare metal, and moisture on contacts over decades is exactly how you get the dull grey or green oxidation I find inside carts today.
The same goes for the old tricks: no jamming a second cart on top, no bending pins, no soaking a board in anything.
What a proper cleaning looks like
The shell comes apart with the right security bit — 3.8mm or 4.5mm gamebit depending on the system — so nothing gets pried or cracked. The board comes out, both faces of the contact edge get cleaned down to bright metal, and oxidation is removed rather than smeared around.
The shell halves get washed and fully dried separately, because trapped moisture is how a clean cart becomes a corroded one. Then it's reassembled and boot-tested on original hardware — not an emulator, not a flash cart — until it starts reliably several times in a row.
When it's the console instead
If every game misbehaves, stop cleaning carts. On the NES it's usually the 72-pin connector, which loses its grip over time. On the SNES, N64, and Genesis it's more often a dusty slot, tired capacitors, or worn A/V and power jacks.
That's console repair territory: diagnosis at the board, slot cleaning or replacement, and a full interior clean before it goes home.
Questions people ask
Should I blow into the cartridge? — No. Moisture from your breath accelerates corrosion on the contact pins, and the reason it ever seemed to work was the reseating, not the air. It's the single most damaging habit of the era.
Will rubbing alcohol on a cotton swab fix it? — It helps on light grime, but it rarely reaches the contamination at the base of the pins, and a swab leaves fibres behind. A proper cleaning means opening the shell and cleaning both sides of the board.
My NES flashes even with a clean cart — what now? — That's usually the console rather than the game. The NES 72-pin connector loses tension over time and needs cleaning or replacing. That's a console repair, not a cartridge job.
Can corrosion be too far gone? — Occasionally. Heavy green corrosion that has eaten through a trace, water damage, or previous rough repairs can put a board beyond saving. You'll hear that honestly rather than getting a bill for work that won't help.
