Sony PlayStation (PS1) repair
1995–2006 · Mail-in from anywhere in the United States, or drop it off at an event.
The original PlayStation is thirty years old, and the part that wears out is the part that moves. The CD laser assembly rides on rails and reads every disc you ever loaded — after thousands of hours it weakens, and the console starts skipping FMVs, hanging on load screens, or refusing to read discs at all.
The good news is that PS1 faults are well understood. A weak laser, a worn spindle hub, a tired tray belt — these are all replaceable, and a properly serviced PS1 reads discs like it did in 1997.
Common PlayStation problems
Games skip, freeze on load screens, or music stutters
A weakening laser — the classic PS1 fault. It gets worse gradually, never better.
Disc spins but 'Please insert disc' appears
Laser too weak to read the table of contents, or a worn spindle hub letting the disc slip.
Disc doesn't spin at all
Failed spindle motor, a dead laser the console won't even try with, or a stuck lid switch.
No video or a rolling picture
Worn A/V multi-out port, failing capacitors, or a cold joint on the video path.
No power at all
Failed internal power supply or a damaged power jack — both board-level repairs.

The old trick of turning the PS1 upside down worked because it changed how the worn laser sled sat on its rails. It was a symptom of a dying laser, not a fix — if that trick ever 'worked' for your console, the laser was already on its way out.
Disc read problems are sometimes the discs, not the console. Bring or send a couple of games along and the whole setup gets tested together.
PlayStation questions people ask
Why does my PS1 skip and freeze?
Almost always a weakening laser. The optical pickup wears with use, and after thirty years most original lasers are past their best. A laser replacement is $59 and restores reliable reading.
How much does PS1 repair cost?
A laser replacement is $59, a full deep clean is $45, and board-level no-power or no-video repairs run $99 to $149 after diagnosis.
Can you fix a PS1 that won't read any discs?
Usually, yes. If the laser is too weak to read the disc's table of contents the console behaves as if no disc is inserted. A new laser assembly fixes the large majority of these.
Do you work on the PSone slim model too?
Yes — the PSone uses a different laser assembly but the same faults apply, and parts are still available for both models.
