The original GBA's dim, unlit screen is the reason most of them sit in a drawer — many owners come in wanting a brighter display rather than a repair. The SP swapped that problem for a mechanical one: the hinge carries the screen ribbon, and years of opening and closing wears it until the display flickers or dies on one side.
The Micro is its own thing — tiny, well built, and usually only in for a charge port or a battery.

GBA cartridges are unusual: some use a battery-backed save, many use EEPROM or Flash that needs no cell at all, and the Pokémon Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald carts use a cell only for the in-game clock — berries and tides stop, but your save file is safe.
If you want a modern backlit screen in an original GBA or an SP, say so in your ticket so the right parts get quoted rather than a like-for-like replacement.

Why does my GBA SP screen flicker or go black?
The screen ribbon runs through the hinge, and opening and closing the console for twenty years wears it out. Replacing the ribbon or the screen assembly fixes it — a screen replacement is $69 plus the part.
Can the GBA SP battery be replaced?
Yes, and after two decades it should be. Original SP packs no longer hold a useful charge. A battery swap is quoted with the part, and the charge port gets checked at the same time since the two faults often arrive together.
Does Pokémon Emerald need a new battery?
Only if you want the clock back. Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald save to Flash memory, so your save file survives a dead cell — what stops is the real-time clock, which means no berry growth and no time-based events. The battery swap restores that.
