The SNES is a sturdy machine — most of them still power on. What fails is everything around the board: the cartridge slot fills with dust, the power jack works loose, and the A/V output gets scratchy from thirty years of cable swaps.
The saves are a separate story. SNES cartridges keep their saves alive with a CR2032 coin cell soldered to the game's board, and those cells are long past their rated life. A console that works perfectly will still lose your file if the cartridge battery is dead.

SNES shells yellow because of the flame retardant in the plastic reacting with UV light. It's cosmetic and it doesn't affect the machine; ask if you want it discussed before work starts.
If several different games all black-screen, the console's slot is the suspect. If one game black-screens in an otherwise healthy console, the cartridge is the suspect.

Why does my SNES show a black screen?
Nine times out of ten it's contact, not electronics: either the cartridge contacts or the console's slot is dirty. Clean both and the game boots. If several clean cartridges still black-screen, the slot itself needs service and the board gets checked.
How much does SNES repair cost?
A cartridge slot clean and re-seat is $29, a full teardown deep clean is $45, and power or A/V jack repairs are $65. Board-level no-power or no-video work runs $99 to $149 after diagnosis.
My SNES games keep losing their saves — is the console broken?
No. SNES saves live on the cartridge, kept alive by a CR2032 battery soldered to the game's board. Those batteries are decades past their rated life. A cartridge battery replacement is $12 on top of a $10 clean, and the save is tested before it ships back.
Can you fix a yellowed SNES shell?
Yellowing is a chemical change in the plastic itself, not dirt, so a clean won't lift it. Ask when you submit a ticket and we'll talk through what's realistic for your console rather than promising a like-new shell.
