The N64 is one of the most reliable consoles of its era. Its weak points are mechanical: the cartridge slot collects dust behind the spring-loaded dust cover, the controller ports wear out from hard use, and the analog sticks in the controllers grind themselves loose.
On the cartridge side, the N64 is split. Many games save to battery-backed SRAM with a CR2032 inside the cart, while others use EEPROM or Flash and need no battery at all — which is why some of your games lose saves and others never will.

The expansion pak slot under the lid on top is worth checking on any console with video trouble — a half-seated jumper or expansion pak causes a black screen that looks like a dead machine.
Send the power brick and A/V cable with the console. N64 power supplies fail often enough that testing the whole chain together saves a round trip.

Why won't my N64 display anything?
Check the expansion pak or jumper pak seated under the lid first — a half-seated one causes a black screen. After that, the usual causes are dirty cartridge contacts and a dusty slot. If a cleaned cartridge still won't show, the board gets tested for a power or video fault.
How much does N64 repair cost?
A cartridge slot clean is $29 and a full teardown deep clean is $45. Controller port and A/V or power jack repairs are $65 each, and board-level no-power or no-video repairs run $99 to $149 after diagnosis.
Do all N64 games have save batteries?
No, and that surprises people. Battery-backed SRAM carts like Ocarina of Time lose their saves when the cell dies, while EEPROM and Flash carts like Majora's Mask keep saving without a battery forever. The cartridge battery database lists which is which, game by game.
Can you fix a drifting or loose N64 analog stick?
The original sticks wear their internal gears down and go sloppy — that's a controller repair rather than a console one. Mention your controllers in the ticket and they get quoted alongside the console.
