Atari hardware is the oldest thing that comes across the bench and often the most repairable. There's very little inside a 2600, the parts are chunky, and nothing is glued shut.
The faults reflect the age: dirty cartridge slots, oxidised difficulty and select switches, and joystick ports whose solder joints have cracked from decades of cable tugging.

Atari 2600 cartridges have no save batteries at all — the hardware predates save memory, so a 2600 cart that won't load is a contact or board problem, never a dead cell.
The 7800 uses the same joystick ports and shares almost all of the 2600's failure modes, so it's quoted from the same list.

Why is my Atari 2600 showing no picture?
Dirty cartridge contacts and a dusty slot cause most of it — these consoles have sat for forty years. A cartridge clean is $10 and a slot clean is $29. If a clean cart still won't display, the RF modulator or the board is checked next.
Can the switches on an Atari 2600 be repaired?
Yes. The difficulty, select and colour switches oxidise rather than break. Cleaning or replacing them is $65 and restores proper action.
Do Atari cartridges have save batteries?
No. The 2600 and 7800 predate battery-backed saves entirely, so there's no cell to replace. If an Atari cartridge won't load, it's contacts or the board.
