Sega 32X cartridge batteries

1994–1996 · Typical cell: Varies / Verify Cartridge · 5 of 6 listed cartridges carry a battery

The 32X had a short life and a library of around forty retail games, most of them arcade-style titles that use passwords or nothing at all. A short list of carts does carry battery-backed storage — Knuckles' Chaotix, Virtua Racing Deluxe, World Series Baseball, NFL Quarterback Club and Golf Magazine: 36 Great Holes among them — and because 32X boards are poorly documented, each one gets read rather than assumed.

What 32X hardware does need is cleaning. The add-on's pass-through connector and the cartridge edge both suffer badly from age, and a large share of "my 32X doesn't work" reports come down to oxidised contacts rather than anything on the board.

Dead save battery?

If your retro game no longer saves — or you're worried about losing a decades-old file — I can replace the cartridge battery properly, with a tabbed cell soldered to the board and save-tested afterwards.

32X battery questions

Do any 32X games have save batteries?

A handful do. Knuckles' Chaotix, Virtua Racing Deluxe, World Series Baseball, NFL Quarterback Club and Golf Magazine: 36 Great Holes are the titles documented with battery-backed storage, though on Virtua Racing Deluxe it only holds lap records rather than a full save. Everything else on the platform uses passwords or doesn't save at all.

Can you work on 32X hardware?

Yes. 32X carts and the add-on itself are covered by the cleaning and console repair services, and the pass-through connector is a common culprit for no-video and no-boot faults.
